Introducing the new and improved Vista: Windows 7

Posted by: Scott Hauman

Microsoft has ran away from the Vista brand name and has given us the safe, nearly generic “Windows 7” label.  Check out CNET’s post titled, Microsoft makes Windows 7 name final, for more details and information.

This quote from Microsoft General Manager Mike Nash is unsettling: “Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore “Windows 7” just makes sense.”

Wow. Since when do generic, personality-lacking products make sense? This is more than a naming issue. This is an unfocused competitive brand positioning problem. Microsoft clearly wants to turn the page on Vista. And what better way to do that than to choose a boring, predictable name? I can’t wait to see what Apple does with this bit of news.
