This summer I was given the opportunity (and extreme challenge) to work on a graphic design project that would need to translate and scale into a full-size graphic vehicle wrap.
It was a project with an engineering department at Bosch, based out of Farmington Hills. Partnering with the Department of Energy, the group is working on a new, more efficient flex-fuel vehicle. After 3 years in development and production, the car (a Chevy HHR SS) is ready for presentation and promotion of its features and advances. Bosch came to Q because they were interested in a more unique, conceptual and powerful design solution. We were hired to develop the messaging, the vehicle wrap design, and supporting banner graphics.
The Q team consisted of Paul (strategy and copy), Jocelyn (creative direction and management), and myself (design and production). It was a fun and new medium to work on, for myself and for Q. From my perspective, the most interesting thing about this project was figuring out how to translate my 2D artwork to a format that would place everything correctly onto a real, very 3D car. It was a huge relief to finally have the production art completed for this job and off to the printer! Fortunately, the process went as smoothly as could be expected, and it turned out great for their first public event this past Wednesday.
Jocelyn, Paul, and I were invited to attend the presentation of the flex-fuel car at Bosch, which in itself was pretty exciting. The event included speakers such as the CEO of Bosch, congressmen Gary Peters from Michigan, and Henry Kelly from the Department of Energy. The car looked fantastic, even receiving autographs on the hood from the visiting VIPs. We are all really excited about how this project turned out and look forward to future work with Bosch!
