Q, Album Art and Stereophile Magazine

Posted by: Paul Koch

While flipping through the October issue of Stereophile magazine, I came across the familiar looking CD cover for David Grier’s new release, Evocative, accompanying an article on the Nashville-based bluegrass guitarist. The CD is designed by Jeff Callender, VP/Design Director at Q. Word is that Jeff has secret connections to Nashville and gets the occasional call for CD design. (Hello Nashville: That number again is 734-668-1695.)

Among reviewers, the Evocative album is hailed as daring and innovative (yet inviting), being a jazzy departure from Grier’s bluegrass roots. For the album design, Jeff tells me they were going for a retro vibe, inspired by the 1960s albums and musicians that first sparked Grier’s interest in the guitar.

I also thought it was a jazzy departure from his old ways of bluegrass. It sounded very different but interesting and good at the same time. It was like listening to ukuleles for the first time and I think he should keep it up.
